If we look around we can observe variety of plant and animal species. There are several organisms like unicellular prokaryotes and unicellular eukaryotes which we cannot observe by naked eyes. The number of species that are known to us are described in the range of 1.7-1.8 million. This is the biodiversity that is the number and types of living organisms present on the earth.
Plants, animals are known by variety of different names in different areas called local or vernacular names. To avoid confusion created by variety of local names, it is necessary to create a universal naming system for living organisms. So that each living organism is known by one name all over the world. This is the SCIENTIFIC NAME. Giving a name to organism is nomenclature.
Nomenclature is possible only when we correctly describe the living organism, this is the identification of living organism. Scientist have facilitated the process of nomenclature, by establishing certain rules and procedures to assign names to living organisms.
INTERNATIONAL CODE FOR BOTANICAL NOMENCLATURE ( ICBN ) set rules for nomenclature of plants and INTERNATIONAL CODE FOR ZOOLOGICAL NOMENCLATURE ( ICZN ) set rules for nomenclature of animals.
SCIENTIFIC NAME ensure that each organism will have only one name all over the world except local names. BINOMIAL NOMENCLATURE SYSTEM provides scientific names with two components- the name of the genus i.e. generic name and specific epithet i.e. name of the species.
eg. Mangifera indica , is the scientific name of the mango plant. First name Mangifera indicate the name of the genus and second name indica denotes the name of the species.
BINOMIAL NOMENCLATURE SYSTEM was proposed by CAROLUS LINNAEUS. This two way naming system was found convenient.
UNIVERSAL RULES FOR BINOMIAL NOMENCLATURE
1. These names are in LATIN or LATINISED irrespective of their origin and written in ITALICS.
2. First word indicate name of the GENUS while second name indicate name of the SPECIES.
3. Both words are TYPED or PRINTED in ITALICS and when HANDWRITTEN it should be SEPARATELY UNDERLINED.
4. First word indicating name of the genus always starts with CAPITAL LETTER and second word indicating name of species should always start with SMALL LETTER.
5. Name of the AUTHOR is written at the end of BIOLOGICAL OR SCIENTIFIC NAME in abbreviated form. eg. Mangifera indica Linn. In this example Linn. indicates this plant species was first described by Linnaeus.
